The heat of summer has finally given us a momentary break. Before long we can expect the many shades of green to begin the transition to the yellows, reds, and oranges of fall. The Pigeon River has already begun to quiet with children having gone back to school, and the change of seasons looming. Still, the water flows steady, cool, and calm through the gorge. Much of the "busy" season at Big Creek Expeditions has passed its peak, but there are more days of rafting ahead. August rafting trips are an amazing time to escape the oppressive heat of summer and provide an opportunity to grasp those last extra moments of vacation in the Smoky Mountains. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and other National Forests around Hartford, TN provide multiple options for sitting next to a crystal clear creek and soaking in the serenity of the mountains. There is still time this summer to escape for one more weekend and find yourself drifting upon the rolling rapids of the Pigeon River at Big Creek Expeditions. We are also offering an end of summer discount! If you mention this blog post, then each guest will recieve $13 off of our base price. Make your reservations today before the season is gone.

The question is commonly broached while floating down a river to a guide, "So, what do you do on your days off?" The answer is not as simple as it may seem. For Big Creek Expeditions, Inc. guides, the answer to a day off from rafting on the Pigeon River usually tends to find its solution while meandering country roads enroute, to float another river. The best answer is usually the simplest. We float another river...
In the Southeastern United States, particularly in the Smoky Mountains, there are endless options of river sections to chose from. The hardest decision to make is where our next voyage will take us. Recently, a trip to the Chattooga River on the border of Georgia and South Carolina was the destination. A group of four Big Creek guides and brave significant others set off on a journey through Section IV of the Chattooga River for a Sunday afternoon excursion. For most participants on the voyage, it would be our first sights to the magnificent, and heralded "Woodall Shoals" and the "Five Falls." Pictures and video were taken of the expedition to divulge the grandeur of a marvelous jewel of the southeast.
So, to accurately answer the question, "What does a river guide do on their day off," you just have to ask the guide the next time you are in their boat of where they just came from.

It's Memorial Day weekend. Thank you to all Vets and the men and women currently in uniform from Big Creek Expeditions, Inc.
Here on the Pigeon River in the Smoky Mountains, we now have Saturday as a scheduled water release day along with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We are all looking forward to the busy days ahead.
Also, we now have a 16' raft just out of the box! We can take groups of 8 or even 9 and let them all ride in the same raft. Here is a picture of her maiden voyage. Lucky Nate had the first opportunity.

Spring is here! The forest is in full bloom. The lake is full with a steady flow coming in. Time for some whitewater rafting in the Great Smoky Mountains. We have been scattered all winter, but the Big Creek tribe is gathering again. Old friends share new stories around the fire. We have some new faces among us this season. Even a few trainees this year. Happy to have them. They bring a fresh perspective and their eagerness to learn is contagious. They remind us old school guides why we love river life-It's just plain fun.
Ebb and flow.
Nate
