How Our Progress Made the 2025 River Season Possible

It has now been one year since Hurricane Helene unleashed a devastating flood that drastically changed our little town of Hartford, TN. In the hours and days that followed, the scale of the damage was almost unimaginable—thousands upon thousands of dollars in losses, especially to beloved local businesses like Big Creek Expeditions. Buildings were battered, roads washed out, and the heart of our rafting community seemed shaken to its core.

Yet, in the face of adversity, the resilience of our owner and our dedicated team never wavered. Even as the floodwaters receded and the true extent of the destruction became clear, we immediately rolled up our sleeves and began the long process of rebuilding. Our goal was singular: to make sure we could welcome rafters again for the 2025 season.

What followed was nothing short of inspiring. Our tight-knit town came together in ways we never expected—neighbors helping neighbors, local businesses supporting one another, and countless volunteers lending their time and skills to restore what was lost. Every day brought new challenges, but also small, hard-won victories. Together, we made tremendous progress in repairing the infrastructure and spirit of our rafting town.

Now, a year later, we have just completed a rafting season that, at times, we wondered if would even be possible. The joy of seeing rafts back on the river and guests returning to Big Creek Expeditions has reminded us of what makes Hartford so special. While we still have work ahead—some local roads remain in need of repair, and the first mile of the Upper Pigeon River is still inaccessible—we are grateful for how far we have come.

What Does “Dam Controlled” Mean?

Our river is dam controlled, which means water releases from the upstream dam dictate when and how much water flows downriver. The dam typically gives us a three-day projected release schedule. This past week, heavy rains led to significant mudslides and flooding along I-40 at exits 450 and 451. As a result, access to the upper portion of the river has been cut off, and unfortunately, that area will temporarily remain closed. We will try to keep everyone updated as to when the Upper Pigeon will be open again. TDOT is currently working hard to clear the roads and HOPE to have the put-in point accessible again soon. We will be reaching out to all guests booked for tomorrow, Saturday, June 21st, to talk about options for your trip. In the meantime, our lower section of the river is still available for those looking to enjoy some outdoor activities this weekend. What It Means To Be A Dam controlled River

Dams serve an essential purpose in controlling water levels in rivers to meet the needs of humans, such as domestic and industrial water supplies and electricity generation. The Walters Dam on the Pigeon River is a significant example of this, serving as a hydroelectric dam that produces energy and regulates the flow of the river, making it popular for recreational activities such as white-water rafting. The construction of the dam, which stands 180 feet high and 800 feet long, started in 1927. Today, it's owned by Duke Energy and is an active hydroelectric facility. The functioning of a hydroelectric dam depends on the potential and kinetic energy of water, which is transformed into electrical energy through a turbine and generator. Factors such as the head (the water drop) and the flow (water's distance from its topmost level to the turbine) influence the amount of electricity produced.

The Walters Dam releases water periodically, especially during the summer months, creating class III and IV rapids on the Pigeon River that make for exciting rafting experiences. For hard boats, the minimum runnable flow is around 300 cfs. However, for rafts, you might want to wait until the flow is 600 cfs. Each of the three turbines from the power station generates slightly over 600 cfs at full flow. The scheduled releases are usually two turbines plus the flow from Big Creek and the creeks in the 'Dry’s' between the dam and the power station. This usually results in approximately 1300-1400 cfs on release days. CFS or Cubic Feet per Second is the flow rate or discharge equal to one cubic foot of water per second. This rate is equivalent to approximately 7.48 gallons per second.

The water levels are dependent upon natural conditions, like rainfall and water temperatures, before Memorial Day weekend and after Labor Day weekend. These are unpredictable and rafting days are not guaranteed at these times of the year. During the summer season, the Walters Dam controls the flow of the river with scheduled white water level releases. The release schedule during the season is every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. There are a few extra releases during holidays in May, July, and September. The dam releases provide water levels that create class III/IV rapids on the Upper Pigeon for those adrenaline-seeking groups and Class I/II on the Lower Pigeon River for a nice family, scenic float.

Spring in the Smoky Mountains means you will see an abundance of flowers come to life. The Smokies have more than 1500 species of flowering plant life. This happens to be more than any other National Park in the United States. While you can drive and see plenty of spring life, there are plenty of amazing hikes to immerse yourself in nature. If you are looking for an easy hike with a little bit of everything, Porters Creek Trail is 4 miles and has everything to see including gorgeous foliage, historical sites, and even a waterfall called Fern Branch Falls. If views are more what you’re after and have no problem with a lengthy hike, then check out Gregory Ridge Trail. The hike is rather difficult and is 12 miles round trip. Along the way to the top, you will see the flaming azaleas that are starting to bloom and bring color to the trail. Once at the summit, you will experience outstanding views of the Cades Cove area, Rich Mountain, and Nantahala National Forest.

There are also plenty of events and attractions that celebrate the springtime all over the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area. If you’re a fan of classic cars, there are two events that occur. The Corvette Expo will take place in March and the Pigeon Forge Rod Runs occur in April and are one of the most popular car events held in the area. So come take a drive through the town and check out all the classic cars being shown. Dollywood is always a fun trip for the family so if you’re planning a visit this time of the year until June, you will get a colorful experience with special decorations, drinks, and food available at the Food and Flower Festival. If your vacation to the area is happening at the same time as Easter then make sure to stop by the Gatlinburg convention center for an art experience like no other. The Easter Arts and Craft show is completely free and gives the opportunity to explore local artists sharing what they love and the beauty they find in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Since we are a dam-controlled river, we typically only take rafting trips when they release water from the dam. At this time of the year, we don’t have a guaranteed water release schedule like we do from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but we do get more rainfall. This keeps the water levels perfect for thrilling rafting expeditions! The amount of people rafting The Pigeon River in spring is less than the crowds you will experience at any point during the summer. This allows for a more intimate experience. With less people and less boats crowding the river, you have the opportunity to truly soak in all the amazing views that surround you on your expedition. Also, with less people comes more opportunities to speak with your guide about things you’re interested in and learn more about our area. Our guides love to share the history of the Pigeon River as well as other landmarks/must do things in the Smokies. Temperatures can vary at this time of the year, but we’ve got you covered! In any instance, if it’s a tad chilly or raining outside we have splash jackets available for free to every guest to help keep you as warm as possible on your trip. Spring rafting has a tentative start date of April 29th, 2025 but we are hopeful to open our doors sooner.

In contrast, in fall we often witness a reduction in water levels, especially during periods of drought.

Drought conditions can significantly affect water levels on the Pigeon River, leading to less regular water releases from Walter’s Dam. During droughts, river flow decreases so much that it makes it impossible for us to provide a whitewater rafting experience that’s worth your while.

Currently, we are experiencing extremely low levels of the lake that feeds our river, which has greatly impacted our schedule for this week. The Whitewater rafting portion of the river is perfect for those seeking an exciting adventure! This trip is filled with Class III and IV rapids and offers a thrilling experience from start to finish.

The Lower Pigeon River will be available on these days with trips scheduled at 12:30 and 3:30. The Appalachian Trail (AT) bisects Max Patch Mountain, allowing visitors an opportunity to knock a few of the 2,000+ AT miles off their belts. Perhaps the most spectacular place to watch a sunset after a visit to Western North Carolina or East Tennessee.

Max Patch is located in the beautiful Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. The Pisgah National Forest was established in 1916 in Western North Carolina. It was home to the first forestry school in the United States - The Biltmore Forest School. Pisgah National Forest is one of four National Forests in North Carolina.

The hike to the top is very mild. Start at the trailhead sign and choose to go left (0.4 miles to the summit) or right (0.3 miles to the summit). Follow the trail to the top and you’ll be there! Currently most of the land on Max Patch bald is being preserved to help rebuild the habitat for Carolina Warblers and Monarch Butterflies. Please be sure to remain on marked trails to help preserve their habitat.

Max Patch sits at a height of 4,629 feet. This mountain is a beloved tourist destination and favorite for many hikers. With a sprawling, scenic landscape full of wildflowers and panoramic views, it is easy to see why the area is so celebrated. So pack a picnic and make your way to the summit for a perfect day filled with outstanding views!

Top Waterfall Hike In The Smoky Mountains

Ramsey’s Cascades is one of the most popular waterfall hikes in the park. The four-mile hike gains over 2,000 feet in elevation and brings you to a 90-foot waterfall with several broken ledges cascading water from tier to tier. A Smoky Mountain “Must Do,” Ramsey’s Cascades is one of the most technical and beautiful waterfall hikes in the park, offering sights and wonders turn after turn that make the Great Smoky Mountain National Park one of the most magical places. This is a difficult hike so be prepared for a strenuous journey to the waterfall.

Getting There:

To reach the trailhead, you will need to head to the Greenbrier Section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Enter the park and continue to drive straight for a few miles. The road to the trailhead is narrow and has quite a few potholes that can definitely give your tire a run for its money, so use caution. Paralleling the road as you drive deeper into the park is Greenbrier, one of the most pristine creeks in the GSMNP. You’ll come to a bridge on the left that crosses over the creek. Cross the bridge and continue driving until you reach the parking area. This is where the trailhead is located.

What to Expect:

Start your journey up Ramsey’s Cascade trail at the trailhead sign. You’ll follow a wide, but rocky, trail for roughly 1.5 miles, at which point you will reach a wooden bridge. The trail continues on from this point another 2.5 miles, with many relatively steep sections. During your hike, you will pass by some of the largest trees in the Smoky Mountains, cross two log bridges that are somewhat high above the creek, traverse through a series of boulders, and hike up steep stone staircases. You’ll be hiking alongside a stream and have the sounds of the creek as your soundtrack throughout your hike. Once you get to the top, you’ll see a sign advising you not to climb on the rocks (slippery when wet!) and perhaps notice a slight shift in temperature as you get closer to the base of the falls. It’s one last boulder climb and you’re at one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in the Great Smoky Mountains, Rasmey’s Cascades.

What You Need:

We recommend you bring a daypack with plenty of water, snacks for a waterfall picnic at the top (or to refuel from the calories you’ll burn), and any other items you deem necessary for a hike. We recommend a first aid kit and an extra pair of socks. Wear sturdy and supportive shoes, like hiking boots, and clothing you feel comfortable hiking in. During the cooler months, wear functional layers to ensure you stay warm throughout the hike. You may want to consider trekking poles on days that the trail can be extra wet, typically after snow melt or rainy days the trail can get a bit slippery.

Best Hiking Near Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge

Sometimes one of the most daunting tasks when planning a trip is deciding which trail to hike. Whether you are a beginner, have young children, are a weekend warrior, or an avid multi-day backpacker, the Smokies has trails to suit everyone. In this blog, we have highlighted some of the best trails in the Smokies for the beginner, intermediate or expert hiker.

Kid Friendly Hikes

Cosby Nature Trail Loop

Roundtrip Distance: 1.1 Miles

Experience Level: Beginner

Located roughly ten miles from our outpost is the Cosby Section of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Here you will find the Nature Trail Loop, a 1.1 mile loop showcasing wildflowers, birding and natural splendors created by Cosby Creek.

Directions: Turn right out of the outpost. At the stop sign, turn left. Merge onto I40 West toward Knoxville and get off on the very next exit #443 Foothills Parkway. At stop sign, turn left. Follow for roughly 6 miles until you see the entrance for the Cosby Section of the GSMNP on the right.

Laurel Falls

Roundtrip Distance: 2.6 Miles

Experience Level: Moderate

The 80 foot high Laurel Falls is named after mountain laurel, a shrub you will find blooming along the trail in May. The trail is paved the entire way, with some short, steep inclines, bringing you to the base of the Upper Falls.

Directions: From Sugarlands Visitor Center, turn toward Cades Cove on Little River Road and drive 3.5 miles to the trailhead where there are parking areas on both sides of the road.

Clingmans Dome

Roundtrip Distance: 1 Mile

Difficult Level: Moderate

Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the park at 6,643 feet in elevation. The views are breathtaking and endless, allowing visitors to soak in the glory of the mountains and view the highest peaks in the park. Take the 1-mile round-trip walk up to the top of the observation tower. On your way back down the road, stop in and explore the Clingmans Dome Nature Trail for souvenirs or further information.

Directions: Turn off Newfound Gap Road 0.1 mile south of Newfound Gap and follow the 7-mile-long Clingmans Dome Road to the large parking area at the end.

Waterfalls You Can Drive To

Meigs Falls

The pulloff to view Meigs Falls is along Little River Road, 13 miles west of Sugarlands Visitor Center (7 miles east of Townsend). The falls is tucked away on the far side of Little River and can be easily missed while driving.

The Sinks

This waterfall is short in stature, but its volume includes the entire flow of Little River. The parking area to view the falls is along Little River Road, 12 miles west of Sugarlands Visitor Center.

Place of a Thousand Drips

During wet periods, this waterfall is dramatic as the flow of water splits into numerous small channels cascading around rocks and creating "a thousand drips." From the parkway in Gatlinburg, turn at traffic light #8 and follow Historic Nature Trail into the park. Take Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail (closed in winter). The waterfall is at stop #15.

I ntermediate/Moderate Hikes

Hen Wallow Falls

Roundtrip Distance: 4.4 Miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Hen Wallow Creek is only two feet wide at the top of the falls but fans out to 20 feet at the base, creating Hen Wallow Falls. The waterfall is 90 feet high and worth the pleasant hike through the hemlock and rhododendron forest. If you look carefully in the water at the base of the falls, you can often find salamanders.

Trailhead: Park in the designated hiker parking area at Cosby Picnic Area (near the entrance to Cosby Campground). Then backtrack on foot approximately 100 yards along the road to the signed start of the Gabes Mountain Trail.

Middle Prong Trail

Roundtrip Distance: 8.3 Miles

Difficulty: Moderate

This hike along the Lynn Camp Prong to the scenic Indian Flats Falls is the quintessential Smoky Mountains stream hike. Be sure to pack your camera! From spring’s floral explosion to October’s stunning autumn foliage, you’ll want to capture every step of this beautiful trail. Due to the hike’s growing popularity, be prepared for crowds during peak fall weekends.

Advanced Hikes

Mount Cammerer

Roundtrip: 16 Miles

Mt. Cammerer is a 16 mile loop that brings you to a summit with a small historic fire tower boasting some of the best views of the Smokies. To break the trip up, you can stay at backcountry site #35 (permits required). Arriving on the Cosby Entrance road you will find a parking lot for hikers to the left. From the lot, follow the Low Gap Trail up and past the Cosby Campground. After a stream crossing you will reach an intersection where the Low Gap meets the Lower Mount Cammerer Trail. This is the start of the loop; head counterclockwise following the Low Gap Trail. After a strenuous few miles you will reach an intersection with the Appalachian Trail. Take a left and follow the AT until you arrive at a short spur trail that leads to Mount Cammerer’s summit.

Mount Leconte

Roundtrip Distance: 17.5 Miles and will require a shuttle

Hit the Smoky Mountain Trifecta on one hike: Waterfalls, the Appalachian Trail and Leconte Lodge! There are several trails to choose from to approach the mountain, with the most popular being Alum Cave Trail. Begin at Trillium Gap Trailhead. Along the way you will pass Grotto Falls, a small falls along the trail that allows the hiker to walk behind and underneath the falls, and can go view the falls off Brushy Mountain Trail. After making it up to the lodge, take advantage of the pre-treated water and restrooms before heading over to the shelter. Into sunsets? Head to the Clifftops overlook, about half a mile from the shelter. Myrtle Point is the place to see the sunrise and both locations offer beautiful photo opportunities. In the morning, after you start on the Boulevard Trail, use the cables as necessary if you’re afraid of heights, as there are a few steep sections next to the trail. After a lot of up and down, you’ll finally make it to the intersection with the Appalachian Trail. Follow the AT all the way back to Newfound Gap to finish out the hike.

Located in the Big Creek section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an easy trail winding its way 1.5 miles into the mountains, where guests can find swimming holes galore. Our personal favorite is Midnight Hole, where the width of Big Creek is constricted by large Sandstone boulders creating one of the most phenomenal swimming holes within the Smokies. This is a beautiful, natural swimming hole that invites you in for a dip to cool off from the summer heat. You will have the opportunity to jump off the 10-foot boulders into the cool, crisp, clear water of Big Creek. The water is crystal clear, and you can see trout swimming in the waters. This scenic spot is great for a picnic and swim! If you continue along the Big Creek Trail past Midnight Hole there is a magnificent waterfall roughly another mile down the trail called Mouse Creek Falls. If you are an avid hiker and looking to stretch your legs for a few more miles, then you can complete the Big Creek Trail with a total of 5.8 miles taking you to the Walnut Bottoms Campsite. There are plenty of other trails that branch off from the parking lot, one of which leads you to one of the oldest homesteads in the park or for a more challenging hiking experience, try making the trek to the summit of Mount Cammerer. Any of the options in the Big Creek part of the Great Smoky Mountains will be a wonderful addition to your Whitewater Rafting Adventure in East, TN!

Fishing in the Smokies-

Eastern Tennessee has some of the most beautiful waters for fishing in the United States. The Little Pigeon River, Big Pigeon River and Douglas Lake are all areas fishermen flock to, pole in hand, to cast a line that takes them far away from being online, in the hustle and bustle of day to day life. Opportunities in Gatlinburg, Hartford, and all around the Great Smoky Mountain National Park for fishing are plentiful, but often times guests are unsure of rules and regulations regarding fishing, lures, and licenses. Read on to learn more about fishing in the Smoky Mountains, what you need, what you’ll catch, and where to go.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has about 2,900 miles of streams within its boundaries, and protects one of the last wild trout habitats in the eastern United States. Approximately 20% of the park's streams are large enough to support trout populations. The park offers a wide variety of angling experiences from remote, headwater trout streams to large, cool water smallmouth bass streams. Most streams remain at or near their carrying capacity of fish and offer a great opportunity to catch these species throughout the year. The Pigeon River is not only a great place for Whitewater Rafting in East, Tn but holds an abundance of places to catch a variety of fish.

License Requirements
You must possess a valid fishing license or permit from either Tennessee or North Carolina. Either state license is valid throughout the park and no trout stamp is required. Fishing licenses and permits are not available in the park, but may be purchased in nearby towns or online (links provided by state below). Special permits are required for fishing in Gatlinburg and Cherokee.

Tennessee License Requirements
Residents and nonresidents age 13 and older must have a valid license. Residents age 65 and older may obtain a special license from the state. Buy a license from the state government of Tennessee.

North Carolina License Requirements
Residents and nonresidents age 16 and older need a license. Residents age 70 and older may obtain a special license from the state. Buy a license from the state government of North Carolina..

Season
Fishing is permitted year-round in open waters.

Time
Fishing is allowed from a half hour before official sunrise to a half hour after official sunset.

Daily Possession Limits
Five (5) brook, rainbow or brown trout, smallmouth bass, or a combination of these, each day or in possession, regardless of whether they are fresh, stored in an ice chest, or otherwise preserved. The combined total must not exceed five fish. A person must stop fishing immediately after obtaining the limit.

Lures, Bait, and Equipment
Fishing is permitted only by the use of one hand-held rod. Only artificial flies or lures with a single hook may be used. Dropper flies may be used. Up to two flies on a leader. Use or possession of any form of fish bait or liquid scent other than artificial flies or lures on or along any park stream while in possession of fishing tackle is prohibited. Prohibited baits include, but are not limited to, minnows (live or preserved), worms, corn, cheese, bread, salmon eggs, pork rinds, liquid scents and natural baits found along streams. Use or possession of double, treble, or gang hooks is prohibited. Fishing tackle and equipment, including creels and fish in possession, are subject to inspection by authorized personnel.

Be A Clean Fisherman
If there's a tangle of line, or an empty can at your feet, clean up after your fellow angler. It is unlawful to dispose of fish remains on land or water within 200 feet of a campsite. The National Park Service recommends disposing of fish entrails in a deep pool downstream for the campsite.

There are also plenty of events and attractions that celebrate the springtime all over the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area. If you’re a fan of classic cars, there are two events that occur. The Corvette Expo will take place in March and the Pigeon Forge Rod Runs occur in April and are one of the most popular car events held in the area. So come take a drive through the town and check out all the classic cars being shown. Dollywood is always a fun trip for the family so if you’re planning a visit this time of the year until June, you will get a colorful experience with special decorations, drinks, and food available at the Food and Flower Festival. If your vacation to the area is happening at the same time as Easter then make sure to stop by the Gatlinburg convention center for an art experience like no other. The amount of people rafting The Pigeon River in spring is less than the crowds you will experience at any point during the summer. This allows for a more intimate experience. With less people and less boats crowding the river, you have the opportunity to truly soak in all the amazing views that surround you on your expedition. If you are visiting the Gatlinburg area we strongly encourage you to make the 45-minute scenic drive over to our quiet little town of Hartford, TN. Here you can find us nestled alongside the beautiful Pigeon River. While we are known for our thrilling whitewater rafting and scenic float trips, our main goal at Big Creek Expeditions is to provide lifelong memories for everyone that chooses to adventure with us. The 11 mile stretch of Pigeon River is broken into two sections that you can choose to raft on. The Whitewater Rafting Trip features class III-IV rapids and is for our thrill-seekers out there that are looking to get drenched while on the river. The Scenic Float trip features class I-II rapids and is ideal for those looking for a simple, relaxing trip down the river. There are some restrictions for the trip: guests have to be at least 8 years old to go on the Upper Pigeon Whitewater Raft and 3 years old to go on the Lower Pigeon Scenic Float. No previous experience is necessary, for either section! Our River Guides on average of TEN years of rafting experience, so they know what it takes to provide a quality trip! Rafting is the Smoky Mountain way to cool off from the summer heat, bond with your family and friends by creating life lasting memories, and truly experience the absolute best that the Great Smoky Mountains has to offer—by playing outside.
