Pigeon River Whitewater Rafting Trips

A slightly curved, horizontal blue bar.

The Pigeon River is Tennessee's most popular whitewater destination. Three trips. Every ability. Ages 3 to 80+.

Big Creek Expeditions is located less than an hour from Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, just off I-40 exit 447, tucked into the Pigeon River Gorge in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. We've been running guests down this river since 2004. You're going to get soaked, you're going to laugh a lot, and you're going to wonder why you waited so long.

The Pigeon River is dam-controlled. Walters Dam upstream manages the flow, which means guaranteed release days and predictable water levels all season. When rainfall is unpredictable, most rivers are a coin flip. The Pigeon River isn't.

About the Pigeon River

A slightly curved, horizontal blue bar.

The Pigeon River runs east to west out of the mountains of western North Carolina, cutting through the Pigeon River Gorge before passing through Hartford, TN. The gorge itself sits inside Cherokee National Forest, with mountain walls rising sharply on both sides, one of the most scenic stretches of moving water in the Southeast.

Walters Dam, located upstream near Waterville, controls the water flow on the Pigeon River. Scheduled releases give us predictable water levels on guaranteed departure days throughout the season. The Pigeon is one of the few rivers in the region where we can tell you exactly what the water will be doing before you show up.

"Walters Dam makes the Pigeon one of the few rivers in the region you can actually plan around."

On the Upper Pigeon, you'll hit named rapids that guides have been running for decades. Lost Guide is the first significant drop, a long technical rapid that sets the tone. Double Reactionary comes fast and keeps you moving. Vega-Matic is the final punch before the take-out. In between, more than 10 Class III features, all with mountain views the whole way down.

The Lower Pigeon is a different experience: Class I–II from start to finish, with calm pools, rock formations, and mountain scenery that makes guests stop mid-conversation to look around.

The Upper Pigeon is a Class III river, the most popular difficulty level for first-time and recreational rafters. It's challenging enough to get your heart going but well within the comfort range for guests with no prior experience. If you've never rafted before, this is where most people start. Our guides do a thorough safety briefing before every trip, and they'll keep you on track the entire way down.
