What Happens When You Get Here
Most of what's built for tourists in Pigeon Forge is designed to run the same way every time. The river doesn't work like that. Your guide reads it in real time, your raft responds to the water, and no two trips are identical. That's the point.
The Pigeon River runs through the Pigeon River Gorge in Cherokee National Forest, and it's the most popular whitewater destination in Tennessee. Walters Dam controls the flow upstream, so you get guaranteed release days and reliable water levels all season. Not a river that cancels on you when the weather shifts. When most rivers become a coin flip, the Pigeon shows up.
Whether you're chasing Class III rapids, looking for a mellow float the whole family can do, or want the full day on the river, all three trips leave from our outpost in Hartford. Ages 3 and up. Every ability. All summer long.
Arrive at the Outpost
You'll arrive at our outpost right on the river banks, a new facility with clean bathrooms, changing rooms, an air-conditioned office, and a photo station where you can view shots of your group taken on the water (available for purchase on a USB drive). It doesn't feel like a tourist attraction. It feels like a place people actually work.
Safety Briefing Before You Launch
Your guide walks through a thorough safety briefing, not to scare you, but to make sure everyone feels capable before they ever touch the water. Our guides average 10+ years on the Pigeon River. They know every rapid by name and they've seen every kind of nervous.
On the Water
Each raft holds 6–8 guests plus your guide. Larger groups travel in multiple boats, with guides coordinating on the water so no one gets separated. Upper trip guests shuttle to the put-in; Lower Float guests shuttle back from the take-out.
What to Bring
Wear shoes that strap on and bring a change of clothes for after. We'll cover everything else when you get here.

Questions About Rafting Near Pigeon Forge
How far is the Pigeon River from Pigeon Forge?
The Pigeon River Gorge, where whitewater rafting happens, is in Hartford, TN, about 55–60 minutes from downtown Pigeon Forge via US-321 North to I-40 West (Exit 447). Despite sharing a name, the river isn't in Pigeon Forge itself. Hartford is a small community east of Cosby at the base of the gorge, and it's where all the major Pigeon River outfitters are based, including Big Creek Expeditions.
Can we book same-day or last-minute?
Yes, and we encourage it. If you wake up in Pigeon Forge and decide you want to go rafting today, call us: 877-642-7238. We take same-day reservations by phone all season, and someone picks up. Most guests visiting Pigeon Forge are working around a loose schedule anyway. You don't need to have everything planned a week out. If there's a trip going out that day, we'll get you on it.
Can we fit rafting into a full Pigeon Forge vacation day?
Easily. The Upper trip is about 2–2.5 hours total from check-in to finish; the Lower Float is 2.5–3 hours. You're looking at a half-day commitment, which leaves plenty of time for Dollywood, the Parkway, or dinner back in town. A lot of families do rafting in the morning, when it's cooler and the kids still have energy, and spend the afternoon at their next stop. The hour drive each way is scenic enough that it doesn't feel like a waste of time. Most guests say it's the best part of the trip.
What time of year is best for white water rafting on the Pigeon River?
Spring through early fall. The Upper Pigeon runs March through September. Peak season is May through September, which lines up well with most Pigeon Forge vacation windows. During June, July, and August, Walters Dam schedules guaranteed releases on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, so you can plan around a specific day rather than hoping the conditions cooperate. Spring trips run faster and cooler; summer is warmer and busier. Families with younger kids on the Lower Float have a bit more flexibility. That trip runs into October. Pick a release day, book it, and you're set.
Do I need experience to go rafting?
None at all. Your guide navigates. Your job is to paddle when they say paddle and hold on when they say hold on. Most of our guests have never rafted before. A lot of them are Pigeon Forge families who packed their week with Dollywood and shows and almost skipped the river. Most say it ended up being the best day of the trip. The safety briefing before you launch is calm and clear, designed to answer questions before you think to ask them.
What if my kids are too young for the Upper rapids?
The Lower Pigeon River Scenic Float is open to guests age 3 and up, making it one of the most family-accessible rafting trips in the Smokies. It runs Class I–II, meaning calm enough for toddlers and genuinely beautiful for everyone else. Families often split up: older kids and adults do the Upper while younger kids do the Lower with another adult, then everyone meets up back at the outpost. Call us and we'll help you plan it: 877-642-7238.
