Summertime in The National Park: Hiking, Swimming, and Scenery

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a stunning destination filled with diverse landscapes, rich biodiversity, and a wealth of outdoor activities. Whether you're interested in hiking, swimming, or simply enjoying the spectacular scenery, there are plenty of places to explore. Here’s a detailed guide to some of the best attractions in the park, focusing on waterfall hikes, swimming holes, and other highlights.


Waterfall Hikes:

* Laurel Falls  

-Distance: 2.6 miles round trip 

- Difficulty: Easy 

- Highlights: This is one of the most popular hikes in the park. The trail is paved and suitable for most visitors. The waterfall drops 80 feet, creating a beautiful and photogenic scene, especially in the spring when wildflowers bloom.


* Abrams Falls  

- Distance: 5 miles round trip 

- Difficulty: Moderate 

- Highlights: Located in the Cades Cove area, Abrams Falls is known for its impressive volume of water. The hike features scenic views and takes you through a lush forest. The pool at the base of the falls is a nice spot for a break, though swimming is not allowed due to strong currents.


*Grotto Falls  

- Distance: 2.6 miles round trip 

- Difficulty: Moderate 

- Highlights: This lovely waterfall is unique because you can walk behind it, providing a rare perspective. The trail offers beautiful views of the surrounding forest and requires some climbing over rocks, making it an adventurous choice.


*Hen Wallow Falls   

- Distance: 4.6 miles round trip 

- Difficulty: Moderate 

- Highlights: This trail features a lovely series of cascades and a 90-foot waterfall at its end. The hike takes you through a quiet forest, and the falls are less crowded, making it a serene option for nature lovers.  


Swimming Holes

*Deep Creek  

- Location: Near Bryson City 

- Highlights: This area offers various opportunities for cooling off in crystal-clear water. There are several spots along the creek with inviting pools suitable for swimming. The scenic surroundings make it a perfect picnic spot as well. *Greenbrier  

- Highlights:  This lesser-known area features a beautiful stream with shallow swimming holes. It's a great place to escape the crowds and enjoy a peaceful day by the water. The nearby trails also allow for hiking and exploration of the surrounding nature.

*Metcalf Bottoms  

- Highlights: This area features a wide, shallow section of the Little Pigeon River that is perfect for wading and playing in the water. It’s a great family-friendly spot, complete with picnic tables and a beautiful backdrop.


Best Scenery & Wildlife *Clingmans Dome  - Distance: 0.5 miles to the observation tower - Highlights: The highest point in Tennessee, Clingmans Dome offers breathtaking panoramic views. The paved trail to the observation tower can be steep, but the views, especially at sunrise or sunset, are worth the effort.


*Cades Cove  

-Highlights: This scenic valley is famous for its wildlife viewing opportunities, including deer, black bears, and wild turkeys. The 11-mile loop road allows for easy access to various historic sites, wildlife, and beautiful mountain views.

*Cataloochee Valley  

- **Highlights:** This remote area is great for experiencing the park's historic cabins and possibly spotting elk which were reintroduced to the area. It’s also quieter than more popular areas, ideal for hikers looking to escape the crowds.

*Newfound Gap Road  

- Highlights: This scenic drive offers numerous overlooks and access to several hiking trails. Notable stops include the Rockefeller Memorial and the Appalachian Trail crossing, which provide stunning views of the Smoky Mountains.



Tips for Visiting
- Plan Ahead: The park is large, so it helps to plan which areas you want to focus on. Some trails can be crowded, especially in peak seasons.

- Pack Essentials: Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a first-aid kit when hiking. Don't forget your swimsuit and a towel if you plan on swimming!
